Draft Programme

•  Where we are in the NAVSHP domain today? The portfolio. The overall DRM as a challenging example.
Christoph Dosch, Chairman NAVSHP Concertation, IRT (1 Mb)

•  Is the European industry ready to commit on an enhanced Research Environment? Is profitable researching in Europe? Are R+D forces working on the same direction? Do we need reference architectures to progress and find synergies?
Patrick Baudelaire, Robert Havas, Thomson (133 Kb)

•  The broadcasting digitalization. Are the technological problems solved? Is HDTV the new opportunity? Integration DVB-S2, DVB-H.
Mr. Jean Jacques Delmas, TDF (80 Kb)

•  Future Technological Challenges for Free to Air Broadcating
Mr André Prahl, Head of Programme Distribution, RTL Television (5 Mb)

•  Will be the future based on Multimedia-ready networks? How important TV over DSL will be? Triple play (internet, TV and telephone) is now the standard offer for most Telecom operators. At present, the real profit comes from personal communication: Telephone and P2P are the basic business drivers and TV and other MM services (distribution services) are offered as an add-on. In order to have a profitable service, important developments are required, both in access and network control but also in content generation and interworking. They cover from network standardization to new content creation but also consider user education and societal changes.
José Jimenez, Telefonica I+D (4 Mb)

•  Who will solve the equation audiovisual-broadband-new media-mobility-extended home-cost ? Digital convergence -- soon in a handset near you!
Digital convergence will happen in the mobile devices and drive the user-centricity of mobile communications. Mobile broadcast TV has already entered into pilot stage and is getting promising feedback from the test users. For one, it is a cost-efficient distribution mechanism for any content.
Mobile broadcasting enables mass distribution of content to the handsets and frees the users of the time and place. Opening up new channels for content re-use, driving up the data tornado and providing the user with tools to order, download, stream, create, store and forward content will create a plethora of new opportunities, roles and business models. Regulatory decisions will also need to take mobile broadcasting into account in order to facilitate the starting of real business.
Juha Saarnio, NOKIA

•  The DVB 3.0. More success?
Helmut Stein, DVB (3,28 Mb)

•  The launch of Industrial Initiatives and Technology Platforms. Towards defining the FP7 framework.
Luis Rodríguez-Roselló, Head of Unit D2, European Commission (116 Kb)

Julián Seseña, ROSE Vision (623 Kb)

During the presentations of the themes included in the draft program, references to the environment will be made: economic impacts, market, SMEs, regulation, standardization, and globalization as crucial constrains when defining the long term research agenda. All the interested persons having participated in the New Media Council and the NEM are encouraged to actively participate in this networking session.

The format of the networking session is based on brief and concise messages for about 7 minutes from each speaker introducing the affair, stimulating about 3 to 5 minutes debate and summarizing the conclusions for about 1 minute.

There will be a report from the session including a summary of the expressions of interests made by the participants in the networking session as well as those expressed through the IST 2004 event website facilities.
